The “Stars” of Singers Marin are the youth choruses. Divided by age levels and experience, these ensembles teach valuable musical skills through a repertoire of varied musical styles, building confidence in performance as they share their gift of song with others. The singers are accepted into the chorus by personal invitation or an audition.
Celestial Voices is the advanced level chorus for girls, aged 10 to 12. Singers should have prior musical training and be ready for a higher challenge. At least one semester in Starlights is recommended. The audition will include singing “The Star Spangled Banner”, a second song of their choice and a few vocal exercises. The conductor will be listening for accurate pitch, vocal quality and overall musicality.
During rehearsals, the instruction will include vocal technique, advanced ear training, and music theory. The singers perform music in three part harmony, both a cappella and with piano accompaniment.
Celestial Voices has performed locally and beyond. In 2005, they traveled to DisneyWorld, participating in the Children in Harmony Choral Festival. Then in 2006, they competed in the Golden Gate International Children’s Choral Festival, placing 2 nd and 3 rd in the Folk Song and Historical categories. In 2008, several members participated with les étoiles in the World Choir Games in Graz Austria, winning a silver certificate in the competition, and in 2012 in Cincinatti, winning a silver medal. The girls have also sung the National Anthem with les étoiles for the Oakland A’s. In 2015 the girls were invited to perform in Carnegie Hall with a large international choir of 250 voices. During the year, the singers are invited to perform for various events, including holiday parties. They also perform community service for the elderly by singing at retirement homes and health care facilities, sharing the gift of song.
Two large concerts for the public are scheduled during the year: the combined youth and adult choruses of Singers Marin present a special Holiday Concert at the Marin Center Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in December, and the combined youth choruses present a Spring concert in May.
Beyond the musical benefits of membership in Celestial Voices, these young women receive lessons in professionalism and poise, while developing relationships that will last a lifetime.
